Prioritisation is key to achieving your goals - Vojin

PRIORITISATION IS THE KEY

Vojin Soskic

Most of us know that exercise is good for you. Most of us know that we should exercise more in order to achieve our goals; yet most of us still do not exercise enough. So, how do we bridge the gap between motivation and success? How do we ensure that our good intentions are realised?

Prioritisation.

I have been helping people achieve their goals for the best part of a decade. The simple truth is that whilst it often works (thankfully, otherwise I’m in the wrong job), there have been times when my best efforts haven’t managed to help people improve as much as we all wished.

Of course, there are many reasons for this, and whilst not everyone is the same, sometimes even those highly motivated for change have not seen the progress they desire. As I said at the outset, most people realise they need to exercise more in order to achieve their goals; however, whether it is work, family, bad diet, or other interests, obstacles somehow manage to get in the way of their success.

Just to let you in on another trade secret; even us trainers here can fluctuate with the progression in our own training regimes unless we have specific targets and drive.

Prioritisation, in the end, is the bridge between motivation and success.

Prioritisation leads to success

Allow me to give you a scenario that I have seen play out many times over the years. A person is aware that to get the body they want they need to up their weekly training frequency yet cannot as life gets in the way. Suddenly they have a big event coming up such as a birthday or a wedding. Despite life only getting busier in the lead up, all of a sudden they somehow make time to get in the gym more. How? They prioritised their workouts to achieve their goals.

Now, of course, sacrifices may have to be made. Making sure to get out of work on time... Not staying out as late... Improving diet (and that includes alcohol!)... Even getting up earlier to get to the gym before work! Whatever it is, they have bravely bumped up their need to exercise at the expense of other choices. Yet, when that birthday or wedding comes around, you try and find me one person that regrets their achievement and all its positive consequences and I will give you some free* sessions!

(*not legally binding)

It's not just what you give up but what you take up. So what else can you do to prioritise?

  • Plan regular session times weeks in advance. Habit makes it easier.
  • Train with a partner or group. Support can only drive us further.
  • Book a session(s) with a personal trainer. You are the engine; we are the steering wheel (cringeworthy but true).

Commitment is king, and ultimately prioritisation will be the proof in your fit and healthy, triumphant pudding!

Trust me :-)
