Art exhibition in the Crucial Cafe

The Crucial Cafe is exhibiting art work from 3 fantastic artists currently. We have work from Patrick Edgeley, Marie Robinson & Maria Rivans. Please read the artists bios below and some examples of their work.

Patrick Edgeley

Patrick Edgeley started out his life as a graphic designer but has turned his talents to screen printing in the last few years. Patrick is based on the south coast of England in Brighton & Hove.

He loves to bring type and vibrant colours into his work, using both real images collaged together as well as hand drawn images.

In 2011 he was included in Print Pattern 2 and started licensing his work for greetings cards and stationary. His work is also licensed by Heals and Joseph Joseph.

Marie Robinson

My area of artistic practice is painting, underpinned by close observational drawing. My subjects are commonplace items particularly from the domestic environment. Some I choose because they hold a personal significance, others I collect from jumble sales or charity shops which have a history unknown to me. I am interested in the arrangement, combination and repetition of these familiar items and the narrative, atmosphere or resonances which can be evoked by the considered choices of subject and composition.

Painting directly from life I employ a representational style to evoke the qualities of the subject which first attracted my attention, without losing the physicality of oil paint on a flat surface. The use of a minimal background with soft, directional light ensures the emphasis of the painting focuses uncompromisingly on the subjects and their relationships.

Maria Rivans

Maria's collages are works of her very personal vision commenting on this world of change, beauty, diversity and mystery. They explore the idea of existing alternate realities and fantastical other worlds which transport us into a surreal and exciting universe. The sometimes heavily populated cityscapes where gigantic exotic flora unexpectedly rise above the horizon and colonies happily live alongside animals, celebrate the hugeness and wonder of life.

Maria draws inspiration from philosophical teachings, cultural references such as vintage Hollywood films, Hitchcock and the sci-fi TV films and shows she watched as a child. Her collage practice is a continuation of her childhood experiences; the active sense of play when exploring ideas during the making process, the rejection of logical depiction and the destruction of the original image.

Maria's work is shown widely across the UK and internationally - New York, Hong Kong, Barcelona . She has received commissions from the National Trust, Penguin Publishers 'Heart of Darkness' book cover and was the chosen finalist for The Aethetica Creative Works Annual in 2011.
