Hogarth Member Story - Hogarth Miles That Matter

Our Hogarth members put on their walking shoes to participate in the 15-mile Banham Marsden March in support of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Held every May, this fundraising event sees thousands of participants walk from Chelsea to Sutton, connecting the charity’s two hospital sites.

Since its launch in 2011, the March has raised over £17 million. These vital funds contribute to improving cancer care and support the dedicated work of nurses, doctors, and researchers striving to develop life-saving treatments used both across the UK and internationally.

The charity plays a key role in advancing cancer research, including the development of new medications and conducting clinical trials that have the potential to significantly change patients' lives. Donations also go towards purchasing cutting-edge equipment, enhancing early diagnosis and treatment, and supporting world-class care. The funds help create modern, comfortable environments by enabling the construction of new facilities and the renovation of existing ones, ensuring patients receive care in a supportive and dignified setting.

THE TEAM

The idea started with Hogarth member Paul who was cared for by The Royal Marsden team during his cancer journey. He was joined by seven other Hogarth members Sade, Alpa, Sheila, Fiona, Ben, Maryna and Jonathan. The team's efforts and combined desire to support Paul has helped them to raise an incredible £4556 and counting for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity so far.

EVENT DAY

The team met bright and early at 8:10am for an 8:30am start. Staying together for the first five miles, after the first stop, Ben the pace setter, took off with a determined pace to win the walk. After hitting the 10 mile marker his paced was slowed by the influx of families joining the five mile challenge. In true team spirit, Ben paused to support Alpa as she hit the Walker Wall at the 12 mile marker! He was ultimately overtaken by Sade who became the first Hogarth walker to cross the finish line.

TRAINING

In the lead up to the event, the team's training was varied with a mix of Shanti's Pilates classes, Terry's HIIT & cycle classes, and Milo's Calisthenics sessions here at The Hogarth Club. Their shared dedication in the gym and classes translated on the event day with their camaraderie and resilience on the walk.

HIGHLIGHTS

Alongside trying to keep up with the pace set by Ben and Sade, an array of snacks amoung the team, the celebratory drinks at the Tabard and comparing post walk blisters, the team were all struck by the number of people walking to support their loved ones, all on the same mission.
