The Hogarth 24h Spinathon 2022 REVIEW

After 2009, 2011, 2013 the time had come to bring the 24 hour Spinathon back!

Spinathon IV was dripping in joy. After a nine year hiatus the time had come to forget about sleep, strap on your cleats and embrace a sore bum. And all whilst raising over £10,000 for Marie Curie.

Such a worthy cause which has touched the lives of many of those pedalling, it was inspiring to see so many perspiring. Whether on a team and cycling multiple hours or popping on a bike for one session everyone delivered. The balloon arch had arrived, the water bottles were filled, the bikes were kitted out. Friday 6pm was kick off.

With a record 19 teams cycling 24 classes back to back it was a hoot. In it to Spin It, Wheely Tyred and Cyclepaths were just some of those taking part. The camaraderie throughout kept each other going particularly in the early hours of Saturday. There was even a first this year. Someone who was not on a team jumped on an individual bike during the 2-4am graveyard shift. Now that is getting into the spirit of things!

The instructors kindly, yes you read that correctly, taught their classes and got everyone through. They put on various themes, from Carnival to Drag to a Singathon the tunes kept coming and the cranks kept turning. The opening and closing ceremonies were marshalled by the event host, Mr Terry Rodham. With his (in)famous pole he banged out five classes and led the proceedings throughout. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks but you can listen to the beat of his stick.

Along the way there were many special performances. The T-Wrecks team cycled the most miles over 24 hours with 529, effectively from Chiswick to Geneva, they were not in a neutral gear. They howled in celebration when they were rewarded with tickets to Brentford vs Wolves this month. There were winners of most average watts in a class and best dressed. If you are a bloke riding in 10 inch heels and a short red dress you will always be in with a chance. Further goody bags kindly donated by Technogym went to most hours cycled (6), youngest participant (11) and notable incredible acts for long and late night appearances.

When it comes to spin bikes Keiser are king and one lucky member even won one of their generously contributed bikes in the silent auction for £400. A special shout out to our friends at Horton and Garton who provided all the participants with lovely event t-shirts which you will see sported around W4 in the coming months!

Once that final full class was done it was time to rejoice together and soak up the atmosphere in the Airedale bar, the scene of many a power sleeping competitor twelve hours previously. Nothing will make you forget about your sore bits and sweaty pits like free cocktails or an Aperol spritz.

The whole event could not have happened without so many people behind the scenes but in particular those on the main stage of studio one, you the participants. Thank you for all your sterling efforts and support. What a special community The Hogarth is, and events like this when so many people pull together ensure it continues to serve the locals in the heart of West London for many more memorable events to come.

So, anyone wanna do it again?
