Tai Chi teaches you the awareness of one's own balance and what affects it

Tai Chi teaches you the awareness of the same in others, and appreciation of the practical value in one's ability to moderate extremes of behaviour and attitude at both mental and physical levels. Chinese system of physical exercises designed especially for self-defence and meditation.

Tai Chi, originally a Chinese martial art developed in the 13th-century, has many proven benefits in helping and preventing numerous health problems as well as alleviating the symptoms of aging.

With a combination of low-impact and slow-motion movements with controlled breathing, Tai Chi can be performed by anybody, no matter their level of health or fitness. Several studies have revealed that tai chi actually reduces stress, improves balance and flexibility, and increases muscle strength in the legs, as well as improving aerobic conditioning in people aged 65 and over.

Throughout these gentle movements, all muscles are relaxed as opposed to being contracted, unlike most forms of exercise, and joints are never fully extended or bent to avoid wear and tear. Meaning that tai chi can be easily adapted for anyone, even those confined to wheelchairs or recovering from surgery or injury. Tai Chi is based on the Ancient Chinese concept of ‘Qi’ which is the flow of energy through all living things. Tai Chi is said to encourage the proper flow of qi through the body which is believed to be the reason for its anti-aging properties.

Although not scientifically proven, multiple studies have shown that Tai Chi, combined with standard treatment, can improve a number of medical conditions. In a collection of studies Tai Chi is believed to help improve quality of life as well as other physical factors of participants suffering from conditions such as: arthritis, hypertension, sleep problems and many more.

Here at The Hogarth Health Club, in Chiswick our Tai Chi classes are designed for beginners, intermediate and advance levels. Yuka teaches Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan, which is one of the most popular and common styles.
