"Pilates is the perfect low impact pregnancy workout (provided your doctor gives you the all clear to exercise) as it boosts flexibility, strength and balance and helps prevent back pain by strengthening your pelvic floor and core muscles. So please feel free to attend any of my classes and let me what stage your pregnancy is at.

Pilates involves doing a series of controlled movements mostly on an exercise mat and can be enjoyed throughout your pregnancy because the exercises can be modified around your changing body.

You are welcome to bring your babies along from newborn to those who are about to start crawling. They can lie next to you or sit in a car seat, whichever suits you both and if you need to feed baby during the class, this is no problem.

Pilates is ideal for the postnatal period so Postnatal ladies are also welcome in my general pilates but without baby. If you do attend my general pilates class please let me know you are post natal so that I can modify the exercises to train your abdominals from the inside out.

For Prenatal mums who have never attended a pilates class I would advise you to wait until after your 12 week scan. You can continue with Pilates right up until you give birth unless you have any of the following contraindications:

  • significant heart or lung diseaes
  • incompetent cervix or cervical cerclage
  • multiple gestation with risk of preterm labour
  • persistant 2nd or 3rd trimester bleeding
  • rupture of membranes
  • placenta previa after 26 weeks of gestation
  • pregnancy induced hypertension ( preeclampsia)

In general if you have exercised before your pregnancy there is no reason to believe you cannot continue with your exercise program. But please check with individual instructors as to their qualification in this field.

It is advisable to wait until you have been given the go ahead in your post natal gp check. These checks are at approx 6 weeks for a normal birth and 8/9 weeks for a cesarean.

I look forward to seeing you in my classes.

Liana."
