PT JOE JOHNSEY IS FASTEST BRIT AT HYROX HOUSTON

Hogarth Personal Trainer, Joe Johnsey completed his 5th Hyrox competition earlier this month at London Olympia and has hit his goal to complete the hybrid fitness race under 70 minutes! The average time for a Hyrox athlete is 1:30-1:40.

Joe has completed Madrid, Birmingham, London Excel, Houston and London Olympia.

"Houston was my best result in which I came 8th in my age category and 29th overall and fastest Brit, it took me 1:09:23. My time in London Olympia was also under 70 minutes which was always my original goal."

What is a Hyrox race?

A Hyrox race is always the same set up. It's 8 x 1k runs with a station between:

1k run + 1000m Ski-Erg
1k run + 50m Sled Push
1k run + 50m Sled Pull
1k run + 80m Burpee Broad Jump
1k run + 1000m Row
1k run + 200m Farmers Carry
1k run + 100m Sandbag Lunges
1k run + 100 Wall Balls

Joe explains:

"The weights of the exercises vary depending on what category you compete in. There's the open category (which is enough for anyone) and then the Pro category (which is for people who have a death wish). I have done both and would always advise NOT doing the Pro first, even if you think you're really fit... If it all sounds a little too much there is also the Doubles (which you do with a partner and share the work) or the Relay (which a team of four have to complete 2 stations and 2 runs each) which is a much better way to dip your toes into Hyrox racing."

So, what's next Joe?

For the first time in a long time I don't currently have another race booked, which will be great for me. The issue with doing as many races as I did is that I wasn't working on getting fitter, I was just training to keep my fitness between races and manage niggles. A gap will allow me to commit to a solid block of training and allow me to see what I'm really capable of. I'm targeting London in November and potentially Birmingham before that!

Joe is very supportive and encouraging to members that are interested in competing:

"I already have had 5 clients and Hogarth members compete in Hyrox and I know there are other members I've bumped into at events too. If the interest continues I am planning on doing some limited Hyrox training sessions on Sundays where we will use the outside track, outdoor running (weather depending) and HIIT studio for a workout like no other!"

If you'd be interested in registering for this, please email joe@thehogarth.co.uk.

Massive congratulations Joe, we'll be cheering you on come November 2024!
