Squashing the Myths about Reformer Pilates

If you’ve ever been curious about Reformer Pilates but felt unsure about stepping into a class, you’re not alone. There are plenty of misconceptions about what reformer actually is, and we sat down with our Solstice instructors to uncover the myths and why so many people fall in love with it once they give it a try.

The 6 Biggest Myths About Reformer Pilates

It isn't challenging enough

One of the most common misconceptions is that Reformer Pilates looks too easy. In reality, the classes challenge strength, control, balance, and coordination in a way many people don’t expect. “It’s definitely a fitness exercise,” says Ben. “It’s not stretching.”

While movements may appear smooth and controlled, reformer Pilates works muscles deeply and precisely, often in ways traditional workouts don’t.

It’s too difficult for beginners

At the same time, many people worry that Reformer Pilates will be too hard for them. It can stop a lot of people from trying their first class, especially if they’ve never done Pilates before or don’t consider themselves flexible or sporty.

However, Reformer Pilates is designed to be adaptable for all levels. Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone who trains regularly, exercises can be modified to suit your body and ability. “We keep it very basic,” says Ben, and “once you’ve got all those elements, you’re good to go,” adds Kellie.

“It’s only for women”

Ben points out another outdated myth: that Reformer Pilates is female-oriented. In truth, reformer Pilates is for everybody.

Men and women of all ages and fitness levels benefit from the combination of strength, mobility, stability, and low-impact movement. “When I started, I definitely wasn’t flexible,” Ben explains, a reminder that you don’t need to fit a certain mould to get started.

“It’s just stretching”

While flexibility can improve through Reformer Pilates, it’s far more than a stretch class. Oliana explains that Reformer Pilates targets the “deep muscles” as well as smaller stabilising muscles that are often overlooked in traditional training.

That’s why people often leave class feeling stronger, more connected, and more balanced throughout their body.

The machine looks intimidating

For many first-timers, the Reformer bed itself can feel a little daunting. “I think many people are intimidated by the actual machine,” says Jules.

But that’s exactly why taster sessions are such a great place to start. They’re designed to introduce you to the reformer in a relaxed, supportive environment.

You’ll get to know what the bed’s like, what it feels like, how to set it up, and feel confident in the room,” says Kellie.

“I can’t do it because of an injury”

Another common concern is that injuries or limitations automatically rule people out from participating. In fact, Reformer Pilates is widely loved because it’s low-impact and highly adaptable. Exercises can often be adjusted to support different bodies and movement needs.

As Jules explains, “It’s actually a very functional, low-impact way to work your body.”

Why People Love Reformer Pilates

So why do instructors and members love it so much?

It’s for absolutely everyone. Reformer Pilates meets people where they are - you don’t need experience, flexibility, or a particular fitness level to start. Because it’s low-impact while still highly effective, many people are surprised by how strong and energised they feel afterwards. “People say to me, ‘I feel lighter, I feel longer,’” says Shanti.

For our Solstice instructors, one of the most rewarding parts of teaching is seeing people discover the strength and confidence they didn’t know they had. “Seeing people find their core and their connection to their bodies,” says Jules.

The sense of community

Beyond the workout itself, reformer Pilates often creates a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. "It does feel like there is a community,” says Ben. “People are chatting, people are talking." That supportive environment can make a huge difference, especially for beginners trying something new.
