What’s the difference between Yin Yoga and Power Yoga?

Did you know we have 9 different types of Yoga classes available for you to try here at The Hogarth Health Club? These classes are designed to suit different abilities so the class you attend might be influenced by your mood, energy levels or other factors! We know it might be a little confusing deciding which class is the right one for you, so we’ve decided to break down some of the key differences between the class styles in a series of written articles, so you can feel confident when choosing your classes for the week.

First up: What’s the Difference Between Yin Yoga and Power Yoga?

Yin Yoga is a quiet, grounded practice where you hold the poses for long periods of time (typically 2-6 minutes). The idea is to release the deeper, denser connective tissues and fascia, which need more time to slowly lengthen and open.

Power Vinyasa Yoga Flow, on the other hand, is a more physically demanding and powerful style of yoga that links breath with movement. It is a perfect combination of high intensity, calorie-burning style, while also focusing on the body, mind and spirit aspects of a Yoga class.

The key difference between the two is in the intensity. Power classes are often fast-paced and rhythmical, with a focus on connecting the flow of movements with the rhythm of the breath, Yin Classes are slower-paced with a focus on finding stillness in different positions.

Which is Better For You?

One isn’t necessarily better than the other, but, depending on your goals, the class that’s right for you might vary. So how can you decide which one is right for you?

Yin yoga is both profoundly relaxing and re-energising. It stimulates vital energy to flow through the body’s meridians, which are located within the fascial tissue. You will leave a Yin class feeling centered, calm and balanced. If you’re looking to destress, stretch your body and calm your nervous system, Yin Yoga could be a good choice for you.

In comparison, Power Yoga helps to improve stamina and correct posture while greatly improving stability and balance. Like other forms of Yoga, benefits can include enhanced concentration and reduced stress. However, because it is higher intensity, it increases your heart rate more than most traditional forms of yoga and therefore provides more of an endurance challenge. So, if you’re looking for a more challenging style of Yoga that burns a few more calories, Power Yoga might be your jam!

Both styles are suitable for all abilities, so you definitely don’t need to be a pro Yogi to attend these classes. In fact, these two class styles actually complement each other really well! The calming essence of a Yin Yoga class can perfectly counterbalance the dynamic vibe of a Power Yoga class and mixing up class styles can ensure a well-rounded and balanced training routine.

They don’t just complement each other either, both class styles are perfect for weaving into your regular training programme for increased variety! For example, if you love to weight train, Yoga is amazing at increasing your flexibility and mobility which can help make your weight training even more impactful and effective!
